The Halfway to Hell Club

A Hard-Boiled Mystery of Deceit, Danger, and Survival in 1938 San Francisco

The Halfway to Hell Club book by Mark J. McCracken

Step back into 1938 San Francisco, where danger lurks in every shadow and intrigue is around every corner. Private Eye Sean O’Farrell lives in a world where the lines between justice and survival blur. When a stunning lady doctor hires him to investigate a philandering husband—or so it seems—Sean knows it’s more than just a routine job. But when the powerful Lord of Chinatown approaches him with a 'minor' family issue, O’Farrell realizes his life is about to take a perilous turn.

As Sean digs deeper, each clue and encounter drags him further into a tangled web of deceit, murder, and betrayal. From smoky jazz clubs to the secret underbelly of Chinatown, he must stay one step ahead of those who would rather see him dead. One wrong move and he could find himself on a one-way ride... straight to hell. But if fortune is on his side, he might just earn his place in the fabled Halfway to Hell Club.

Full of pulse-pounding suspense, atmospheric settings, and a hard-boiled detective at the center, "The Halfway To Hell Club" is a must-read for mystery lovers and fans of classic noir.

What Readers are Saying

"Mr McCracken spins an excellent detective tale. Granted, other than a few minor editorial and technical issues, (DRUM magazines, not "barrel") I had a very enjoyable read"

—Charles Potter

"I have read both of books of the series and found them to be very enjoyable. Just like the first one, the second was hard to put down. The characters were well thought out and well delivered.
I am looking forward to the next Sean O'Farrell novel."

—William S. Braid

"I listened to the audiobook version of this title. It was read by the author. I've listened to thousands of audiobooks and I am pretty particular about the quality of the narrator so...good job Mark. The only problem was that the audio quality and the editing of the product was less than stellar which detracted from the listening experience. However, the book was great. I liked that Sean O'Farrell is a good guy in a sometimes gritty profession. There was witty conversation between characters. The plot had interesting twists and the characters were credible. A little salty language and gritty situations. The book is set in the 1930's and I felt the characters and story line were true to the time, and after all this is fiction.
When will we see Sean O'Farrell again?"

—Mac

"I just finished and can not wait for the sequel. I was somewhat reluctant to read this as I have tried other books which try to recreate the hard-boiled private eye and was always disappointed- but this was thoroughly enjoyably and well written. Great plot but the real surprise was the character development. You won’t be disappointed!"
